INFORMATION ABOUT USHUAIA
Between Andes Mountains and Beagle Channel we find the most southern city of the world: Ushuaia. There are many attractions in this place that offers a unique atmosphere that convines sea, mountains, glaciers, woods, nature and history.
The former inhabitants of the area were the Yamana natives, they handed down the city name which meanning is “bay that goes straight through the west”
Ushuaia´s first historical testimonies coincides with the european navigators audacious raids which took place from the XIX century. The Yamanas were surprised by the Beagle Ship crossing the Channel waters that later took the ship´s name. That is how the first contacts with white man began. After more than 6000 years of living in the area, the World´s most southern inhabitants began to receive european expeditions.
The Yamanas were canoe sailers who moved from one place to another and occupied both shores of the Beagle Channel and lands up to Cape Horn. They hunted mostly seawolfs, which due to its high fat content was one of their main feeding supplies. Penguins, whales, fish, seafood, roots, fruits and mushrooms completed their diet.
They wore seal skin from the neck to the waist. Besides that, to protect themselves from cold and humidity they covered their bodies with seal fat or seawolf fat.
They spent most of their time hunting and fishing, being not very much in land. Their canoes were made of lenga tree bark. In the middle of them, upon stones, clay and soil, there was a permanent burning fire. That is why the former area expeditionaries named this place “Tierra del Fuego” (Land of Fire)
In 1870, european missionaries established the first settlement. Thomas Bridges and their descendants who still live in Ushuaia, left us a invaluable legacy: the first english – yamana dictionary, and his son´s Diary “The uttermost part of the world” which narrates the peripeties of living among the native people. Nowadays, during summer, you can visit “Harberton Farm” which belongs to the Bridge´s Family.
Ushuaia was created in 1884 by Roca President initiative with two objetives: solve the prision problem and assure Nation´s sovereignty. Colonel Laserre took care of this issue, he was in charge of an Argentine army squad and carried out the foundation ceremony.
Those old days aromas may be recreated by walking through the old part of town where there are still many original constructions.
This colorful city had a remarkable demographic growth, particularly from 1970. One of the main reasons was the industrial promotion law, that generated the settlement of big factories related to electrical apliances production.
Ushuaia, a city that constantly grows, amazes their visitors with its natural beauty and its history. |
